Employee Mobility

Career Pathing

Every employee is different, and what it takes to challenge, satisfy, and renew individuals varies.  Today, individuals at all levels pursue multiple career pathways for a variety of reasons.

Career Options Model

1.  Growing in Place

Describe why you chose this option?  How do you plan to grow in place?  What will challenge you?  Do you want to expand your role/responsibilities?  Do you want to widen and deepen your skills and knowledge?  What could be added to your current job to make it more interesting?

2.  Moving Up

Describe why this option is attractive to you.  What are you seeking:  opportunities to amplify challenges and responsibilities, increase compensation, a further leadership role, to develop new relationships?  What major contributions have you made this past year?  Assert why you should be promoted.  Who is your competition?  What are their strengths and weaknesses?

3.  Moving Across

What would this option be?  Why it is appealing?  Would you be supporting the organization in another area?  Do you see this as an opportunity to gain new experience and skills?  Would moving across provide you a holistic understanding of the organization?  Would you be moving to a position that is important to the organization?  What other areas in the company interest you?  Which business units are expanding?

4.  Moving Down

How will moving down differ from your current situation?  Which skills and knowledge do you want to take with you to the next opportunity?  What are you doing now that you don’t want to be doing three years from now?  Would you have less or more responsibilities/hours?  What impact would moving down have on your personal life?  Are you willing to accept the same or lower salary?

5.  Moving On

Have you seriously considered options 1 – 4?  Have you gathered all the information you need to make an informed decision?  If not, what information do you need?  How will this option better match your values, interests, and skills?  Does your family support this option?
