Change and Context

Key Assumptions (partial list)

Change will present some element of complexity.

Change will have some degree of impact on our constituents.

Change will affect the political, technical, and cultural aspects within our organization.

The context component of change identifies key elements of the change environment, e.g., complexity, relationships, and impact.

First.

Through assessment we identify the perceived complexity of the change initiative, including:

bullet

Speed - How fast is the change?

bullet

Direction - What course and motion?

bullet

Depth - How deep will it go?

bullet

Dimension - How far-reaching is it?

bullet

Disruption - How much chaos and confusion?

Second.

If the assumption is correct, that change will have some degree of impact on our constituents, it's important to address this issue early in the change process.  Key relationships include:

bullet

Customers

bullet

Partners

bullet

Employees

Third.

This component identifies the impact the change initiative will affect including:

bullet

Political - control, governance, influence, dominance, direction, vision, persuasion, authority

bullet

Technical - transformational technologies, such as implementing a new customer self-serve system, as opposed to incremental

bullet

Cultural - values, conduct, behaviors
