Social and Task Congruency Charts

We are typically most comfortable with styles that are similar to our own.  Which style do you have the best working relationship?  Because of our behavioral preferences, some styles will cause us more discomfort than others will.  Which style are you the most uncomfortable with?

Use the congruency charts below as quick reference for checking styles’ compatibility and refer to the tips for Interacting With Styles Chart for guidelines and steps you can take to make your relationship with others’ style more effective.

As one would expect, those styles with similar motivators are most compatible with others socially.  The exception is the Driver-Driver, whose competitiveness and need for power can get in the way, resulting in a social relationship that is moderately agreeable.

Task Congruency (work assignment orientation)

The scenarios change when it comes to tasks. Given their supportive, cooperative nature, Amiables top the compatibility list.  Although low on the social congruency, Analyticals rate high or moderate with all styles except Drivers in task congruency.  When working on tasks, the Analyticals objectivity, data gathering and fact-finding strengths are respected and useful to other styles to achieve their goals.

With those dyads that fall in the least compatible column, conflict and tension arise because they have similar needs and compete to have those needs met.

DriverDriver compete for power and control.

Expressive Expressive need recognition and power.  Their general      unwillingness to deal with the details also fosters discord.

DriverAnalytical both need control and the clash comes with the           Driver’s need for less logic and data versus the Analytical’s need for          extensive analysis to make decisions.

Driver – Expressive need freedom to do things their own way and                 they both want to delegate.
