When Your Style Differs From Your Manager’s

If your working style is different from your manager’s and you think it is hindering your relationship, look for an opportunity to meet with him or her and discuss what you can do to be more responsive to the way he or she likes to work.

Meeting Tips

Start with an open-ended question:

“How would you like me to work with you on the ABC project?”

“What’s important to you in the November sales meeting?”

“How can I help with…?”

“What can I do to make our working relationship more effective,                     more productive?”

If you need more information, ask specific questions:

“How often do you want to meet?”

“Do you want to communicate in person, by telephone, or via email?”

“How much information do you want?”

“How do you want me to prepare my reports?  Do you want me to:

send a brief agenda a day before our meeting?”

 develop a summary with recommendations?”

provide a detailed progress report with financials?”
